Art Therapy

Many people suffer from mental health issues that are hard to cope with. Of course there are lots of treatments out there, including counseling and medication. Something that people don’t always think of right away is arts based therapy. Art therapy can be anything from painting to craft or writing a song. Anyone can do it! You don’t need to be an artist or professional to do it. All it takes is your motivation. It will help you cope with your mental health problems and raise awareness of self. If you’re not feeling inspired, there are many many great resources out there! Thank you internet =) Just to give you an overview, here are some amazing examples!

Our first example is actually from one of our own service users, S. T.: “Drawing helps me to express myself in ways words can't. It can be a way to de-stress and let everything out. I've only recently discovered I can draw pretty decently. I guess you can do anything you put your mind to.”

Here is another amazing resource which collected more than 100 different pieces depicting depression. Some examples:

Maybe you have heard of the bodypaint artist Mirjana Kika Milosevic? She creates amazing optical illusions that may not be as much therapy for herself but raise awareness for important issues, e.g. domestic abuse, like this one:

Here’s a video of how she did it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iiCuk2sauNw

These are all quite dark images. However, no one says you can’t be more positive when you are creative! These pics are great examples of what you could do!

We found an inspiring blog that can help you engage with art therapy and with your creative side if you like to have some guidance: http://mindfulartstudio.com/ They offer a free guide to creative self-care, tips on how to get started and some great ways on how to be creative. Check it out!

We would love to see your art and your ways of dealing with your struggle. Comment (anonymously if you like) and let us know what you do!
